What A Hoot

Who doesn't love a parliament of chocolate owls?

So, after seeing these adorable owl cupcakes that my BF's Mom and Sister made, I've been patiently waiting for an excuse to make them too.  Halloween seemed like the best excuse ever!  Every Halloween, people in my office bring their kids to trick-or-treat and show off how cute their offspring are.  So I figured, what little kid (or parent) doesn't want a tasty homemade treat?

I didn't have time to make the cupcakes from scratch (and lets be honest, I really was more excited to decorate these than to bake them) so, I cheated and used a box mix and pre-made frosting.  To me, the thought of box mix and a can of frosting generally makes me cringe but this might have changed my mind given how much time I saved!  Seriously, all of less than 10min to make!  And lets be real, kids don't care.

What you'll need
  • Cupcakes (homemade, box-mix, doesn't matter)
  • Chocolate frosting (homemade, store bought, doesn't matter)
  • M&Ms
  • Oreos
The hardest part of this whole thing is trying to get the little ears right!  While frosting, take your knife and pull up (seriously, it sounds easier than it is).  It can be a little easier if you get a bigger dab of frosting on your knife, plop it on and pull it up.

Next, take your Oreos (2 for each owl) and relive your childhood (twist).

Take a M&M (I used peanutbutter M&Ms because they're my favorite, but you can use whatever kind you like) and gently squish it into the Oreo's frosting, enough so that it'll stay in place.  Gently take your "eyes" and press them onto the top of the cupcake.  Finally, take a third M&M in a different color, turn it on its side and stick it into the frosting like a beak.

These are seriously the easiest cupcakes to make and look super cute!  I'm thinking of making them for my little brother's birthday.

  1. Too adorable and he'd love them. Though he doesn't eat cake! He would think they're cute, and the rest of us eat cupcakes!:-)
